Desire and Aversion – Bedrock of Samsara

Our entire mental conditioning and all the external edifices and social structures were geared towards providing a pleasant environment for us to live in. We gravitate towards all that is positive and pleasant and tried to avoid that which is negative or unpleasant. This feel good conditioning then become a trap for us to remain in samsara.

When something negative come our way we would try to avoid it by using euphemisms or give it a positive slant. Many of us are perhaps like Kamanita as outlined in the following story based on the jataka.

Kamanita rejected Buddha’s teachings because he thought it was not life-affirming and Buddha was very negative in his teachings.

Kamanita wanted to hear pleasant and beautiful things. In turn Buddha called him a fool.
